The Brzinski group (SquishLab@Haverford) works, primarily, in the field of Soft Matter Physics. Soft Matter encompasses the study of amorphous solids, non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, and inherently athermal or out-of-equilibrium materials. Our research interests include granular rheology, sedimentation at low-Re, failure in granular solids, and the control of bulk properties through particle-scale interactions. We are largely motivated by the role these physics play in geophysical processes like seismicity, weathering of land forms and rocks, and sediment transport by wind or rivers, and even planetary formation in the early solar system.
